Menopause: absence of menstrual period for 12 consecutive months a woman may be ovulating during this time. Smokers tend to reach menopause earlier average age is 51 some women may even reach menopause in their 60s. The time before the onset of menopause is characterized by hormonal changes. Levels of estrogen and progesterone begin to fall as ovulation becomes more and more and more irregular many experience some sense that her hormones are off. Blood tests can be done to determine if a woman is going through menopause doctor can assess this very easily. Heavier than normal periods not only in time but in quality. As estrogen and progesterone levels fall, fsh and lh levels increase . Finally the ovary no longer responds to fsh and periods completely cease. But fsh levels remain high and along with low estrogen cause changes associated with menopause.
