NATS 1730 Lecture 5: Topic Scientific Change Lecture 5
Document Summary
Make parameters constant in order to get most accurate results. Precision of measurement - how reproducible the measurement is within the limits/parameters (e. g. 195 lbs +/- 0. 5 lbs) Working definition - defines the quantity of what you"re trying to measure (e. g. length, pain) Proxy definition - when you cannot measure something directly (e. g. cannot directly measure arthritic pain, but can measure something related to the pain [scale on the wall, and tell patient to reach as high as possible]) Double blind experiment - where the person that is running the experiment does not know whether they"re running the test or control group; done to mitigate placebo effects. Accuracy - how close a value is to the true measurement (e. g. actual weight = 200lbs, recalibrate the 195 scale, the precision[limits] remain the same but accuracy is increased} Avegadro"s number: 6. 022 x 1023 = 4 sig figs; 1st part is mantissa, 2nd part is exponent.
