NATS 1750 Lecture 8: NATS Geological Resources
Document Summary
In canada mineral resources are an important part of our economy, there are many sources and type of resources. This lecture looks at the geology that is associated with various mineral, fossil fuel, and energy resources. Mineral (which are mined) - these can mined and are found in various deposits in different geological structures. These can be extracted through various mining techniques. This group includes both metals (like iron, gold etc) and non-metallic like diamonds, aggregates and salt. Energy resources - things like running water and tides as well as volcanic vents can be used to generate electricity. (these are discussed in text, but won"t be addresses in this lesson) Nonmetallic (non metallic won"t really be discussed here) Metal must be readily extracted from the mineral. Ores are not uniformly distributed through earth"s crust. The concentration must be high enough to yield a profit. The amount of useful metal present is the ore grade.
