One key thing we need to do in geology and studying earth is to understand how old things are (these two things are usually used together to determine a rock"s age. Relative dating = how old are things relative to one another. Absolute age = how many years old something actually is like the relative position of layers, presence of fossils, and radioactive dating. The structure and composition of the rock itself can give us this information through information. Different rocks form at different times in different ways, but they are often found mixed together. Science works on the premise that the laws of physics, chemistry etc are uniform (they do not. Rock structure change with time or location) understanding the history. By looking at how actual rock forms are structured then we can apply some basic principals in. When rock beds are warped, that means that some other processes have occurred to alter them.
