Document Summary

Unit 6: technology in the age of imperialism. Imperialism: a political view point; all about expanding a countries territories around a country- building a world-wide empire. Essentially a political philosophy which advocated expanding a country"s empire by extending political and economic control over other territories. Colonization: the home country would establish social, economic, political and military control over another country. Think of colonization in two ways: how technology was used to justify colonization (reason, excuse). Idea: many euros believed their culture/civilization was superior to other. Many of them took it upon themselves to go to other places around the world to race the civility of what they think savage/heathens. Used as a way to justify empire building. Were associating this with a particular social duty (raising level of civility of other places in the world) Europeans thought about those in the colonies as children; lacked skill, fortitude.
