Nats 1775 unit 17: historical geneic research controversies. Discovering the structure of dna: the double helix: history. Discovering structure of dna was top priority for many scienists ater wwii. Story related to theme of gender and science. Among the major players working on dna structure was the pairing of rosalind franklin (1920-58) and maurice wilkins who worked at kings college at the university of london. Franklin: analyzed dna using x-ray crystallography; produced a number of very good images of a and b form which could be used to determine dna structure. Franklin had diicult ime working with wilkins; treated her more like a technician than scienist and was under assumpion franklin would be his assistant instead of partner. Franklin also excluded from many formal and informal scieniic networks such as male only dining or smoking lounges. At same ime, francis crick and james watson also working on dna at cambridge.
