Lecture #11 science, technology and ww1 (short answer part) New technology was introduced, but war tactics did not change regarding time, transportation of people. Existing technology (such as railroads, telegraphs, machine guns, barbed wire) were combined with new technology such as (airplanes, tanks, and poison gas) soldiers need to figure out how to use new tech. Usa entering war broke the stalemate (more men and resources) War was not consistent at all because of new ideas at that time. For instance soldiers preferred lances even though machine guns were the best thing to use. Seen as a world powers even though small nations wanted it. Navy ships were the largest/most powerful ship on the seas. Navy leagues: people convinced government that without a navy, they would be destroyed, lobbies were funded by coal and steel, shipyard, arms manufacturing industry and fueled nationalism. Role: - protect trade routes, keep communication open between empire and colony, prevent invasion.
