The perception of one sense initiates a reaction response in another sense. Historically it was dismissed by scientific community until 1990"s. Technique functional magnetic resonance imaging of brain demonstrated that synesthetes" brains do function differently. Numbers: 0, 1 and letter o and i are often achromatic and in different languages, symbols with o circle. Sequences of: days of the wee, months of the year, numbers can be arranged sequentially around the body. Personification letters, numbers, people, can take on traits; personalities. Evidence: fmri imaging technique which records peak blood flow in an area of the brain. Show: non-synesthete a black letter on white background. They show the colour part of the brain active as well. 2 possibilities: direct connection of neurons, indirect via chemicals. Normally when one sense is activated, the brain will dampen/inhibit activity in other parts of the brain via an enzyme.
