NATS 1870 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Blip (Website), Ice Pellets, Refraction
Document Summary
Light from moon encounters ice pellets in atmosphere. Ice pellets located in thein cirrus clouds, 30,000-50,000 feet in atmosphere. Geometry of ice crystals depend on temperature of cloud. False images of sun at 22o either side. Sometimes associated with halo around sun produced same way as moon halo. Last sliver of sun at sunset, at a sharp edge (like water, mountain) appears to go through a progression of colours: red-orange-yellow-green-blue is possible (rare) It is due to the atmosphere acts like a prism due to density gradient in atmosphere.
