NATS 1870 Lecture 14: SC NATS 1870 LECTURE 14
Document Summary
Chemistry and colour- acids, bases & indicators ph + indicators: Kitchen science: cabbage juice is an indicator: contains anthocyanin. When you put hydrochloric acid in water: h2o + hcl > h3o+ + cl- H3o has 3 hydrogens known as hydronium ion . Hcl gets detached in water solution and became attracted to water molecule. The concentration of h3o+ in a solution provides a measure of the acidity. Acids are called proton donors or electron pair acceptors . Hydrogen ion in h2o gets attracted to nh3. Oh- is a hydroxide ion and is responsible for characteristics of basic solutions. The concentration of oh- measures the degree of alkalinity of a substance. Bases are proton acceptors or electron pair donors ph scale: Acidic: concentration[h3o+] > [oh-] ph value of 0=7. Neutral: concentration [h3o+] = [oh-] ph value of 7. Base: concentration [h3o+] < [oh-] ph value of 7-14. The ph of a solution can be determined by an indicator.
