De nition: life is something that can reproduce and evolve through natural selection (not suf cient as we can also create this with arti cial life ) Living organisms show order, arranged in pattern, cell structures etc. Not suf cient: order alone will not determine life (ex: a book has order) Organisms either reproduce (cells) or product of reproduction (mule) Living/non-living gray area: viruses & prion protein cant reproduce unless it affects a cell, in which reproduces through cell division. Organisms grow & develop during some period of life cycle directed by heredity. Not suf cient: growth alone with not determine life (ex: a re grows) Use energy for maintenance, reproduction & growth of organism. Not suf cient: energy utilization alone will not determine life (ex: laptop) 1st law thermodynamics: energy cannot be created or destroyed.
