NATS 1880 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Planetary Science, Extremophile, Exoplanet
Document Summary
We"ll start out in our solar system. Science fiction believes so, but there is no clear evidence of this life. Sir arthur c. clarke sometimes i think we"re alone in the universe, and sometimes i think we"re not. In either case, the idea is quite staggering . Macroscopic life does not exist anywhere else except for earth. Many stars have potential sites for life. The technology is available to search for signs of life beyond earth. Earth is not special so life could exist elsewhere. To find planets that contain life we need to understand the one planet we know does- earth. All sciences contribute to the search for eti. Astronomy has changed our perspective of the universe. Planetary science gives context to where to find life. Only in 1995 we started thinking planets could be common. The main focus is to find exoplanets with comparable surface conditions to earth.
