NATS 1945 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Terminal Velocity, Central Force, Geodesic
Document Summary
Gravity, force and space (pp. 72-102: suppose that zdeno chara, a giant hockey player and captain of the boston bruins, gives a push to another player from behind, causing the player to slide forward along the ice. List (or draw) all of the horizontal and vertical forces acting on the player, including the direction of each force. You can de(cid:374)ote chara(cid:859)s pushi(cid:374)g for(cid:272)e as fchara. Also i(cid:374)di(cid:272)ate (cid:449)hi(cid:272)h for(cid:272)es are (cid:271)ala(cid:374)(cid:272)ed, a(cid:374)d (cid:449)hi(cid:272)h for(cid:272)es are field forces and which are contact forces. (note: ice is not a perfectly frictionless surface). Horizontal forces: contact force (tension), friction, the normal force (upwards) Vertical forces: field force (gravity pushing downwards), air force or resistance. If we travel to a different planet or moon, our weight will change. Mass: a measure of an objects amount of atoms. Mass has a fixed quantity the number of atoms and the amount of matter does not change on earth, the moon, space.
