Living body – meiosis -same pages as mitosis - Meiosis involves 2 cell divisions and results in the formation of 4 haploid gametes • Keeps chromosome numbers constant through generations o Haploid gametes – sperm, egg cells o Fertilization restores diploid number • Increases genetic variability in the population through genetic recombination o Crossing over o Independent assortment • Failure of chromosomes to separate during meiosis creates cells with extra or missing chromosomes o Nondisjunction -Meiosis divides the chromosome number in half • Germ cells – diploid (2n) o Found in gonads – ovary, testis, anther o Each cell has a pair of homologous chromosomes o Formed by mitosis o Undergo meiosis to produce haploid gametes • Gametes – Haploid (1n) o Each has one member of each homologous pair o Sex cells o Formed by meiosis o P
