NATS 3200 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Indian Gray Mongoose, Malaria, Flightless Bird
Document Summary
Case study: misleading information on the type of threats in us. A comprehensive study of u. s biodiversity revealed the following main threats to vulnerable and endangered species (looked at causes behind the endangerment of the vulnerable species): Study was published in 1998 by wilcove et. al. (bioscience) % of vulnerable and endangered spp affected: habitat destruction and degradation, competition with, and predation by invasive (alien) spp, pollution, overexploitation, disease. Note that they don"t add up to 100% 3: more than one cause can cause the endangerment of a species, not mutually exclusive. Often, several of these threats contribute to the loss of particular spp: sometimes pollution affects one spp more than another and in different ways. Different group of spp vary in their vulnerability to these general types of threats. For the aquatic groups examined (amphibians, fishes, freshwater mussels, and crayfish), pollution is a greater threat than invasive species: missing information from snails or leeches.
