Lecture 2- st. thomas aquinas: aquinas" definition of law: law is a directive of reason for the common good made by him/her/them by law making authorities, reason: things we ought to do to reach the end. If you really have the goal/end, there are certain things reason tells you to do: common good: it must have a particular aim/end goal. The good of political community: law maker: law must come from him who has the care of the community/ a superior force, promulgation: must be made known. If the laws are used to direct individuals, they must know what the law requires. Retroactive- laws that are made after the fact, laws have to be prospective. 4 types of law: eternal law: the law that governs all creation. Made by god, to direct everything, the divine plan. Don"t know what god"s ends are, things unfold in accordance with his plans.
