Athenians say the strong do what they will, the weak must suffer what they must. Sovereign nation state is an equal unit under the law, the right to be free from all direct interference from other states. The very nature of international politics is profoundly unequal. Truth is, big states crush the small, the dialogue of the melos and athens invasion, shows how power works in the world. International relations is fundamentally on relationships of power. The field of international relations feel as if power is instrumental, that its used as a tool and a weapon, to make others bend for (cid:449)ill, to (cid:373)ake so(cid:373)eo(cid:374)e do, (cid:449)hat they (cid:449)ould other(cid:449)ise (cid:449)ould(cid:374)"t, through for(cid:272)e. Instrumental power: visible tool, of strength such as a strong military.
