The state is a central concept in the study and practice of politics. It (cid:272)o(cid:374)(cid:448)eys the idea of (cid:862)a(cid:374) impersonal a(cid:374)d so(cid:448)ereig(cid:374) politi(cid:272)al order(cid:863) i(cid:374) so(cid:272)iety: human society predates the state, social evolution is the process of creating power and more effective forms of social organization. It doesn"t really matter who the victim is. It is, in reality, a power struggle between two sides: the difference between a nation and a state: a nation is a tightly-knit group of people who share customs and beliefs but lack the sovereignty of a state. A state (or country) is a self- governing political entity with borders instated. The chief has to have the power to compel others (w/ military force): state: a highly structured, more organized, more class-divided social order. Change is usually slow and gradual: anthony giddens, modernity is a shorthand term for modern society, or industrial civilization.
