Document Summary

Ancient rome 1: the centrality of rome, the roman republic. Rome lasted longer than ancient greece 1400 years. Dominant power for at least 600 of those years. The influence is every bit as through like athens we don"t appreciate it as much as the athenian heritage. Roman history is divided in two parts: the republican era and the imperial era. A republic is a system of government, which does not let power fall in hereditary rule and may ultimately rest power in the people or the rule of law. The political institution becomes more important then the individuals living in it. This does not mean democratic thinking even though they overlap. How laws rule the governance of society power should not reside with one person alone, and it should connect with the will of the people. A republic is formed in rome in 496.
