Persia spent a lot of money to make sure that athens was punished. They helped sparta to get great navy and destroy athens. It brought a huge distraction to greece of life and property, it divided the city states and weakened capacity of greeks to stand outside treats from macedonians. What caused it: the cause of the war is the same cause for all other wars. Fear was the most important and prominent: the growth of athenian power that put fear in spartans and compelled them into war.
