France has been struggling to create a system that has governability, to represent the variety. France doesn"t want to exclude people from the system. The french experiment is a great value in the context of democracy. Charles de gaulle once remarked how are you supposed to govern a country that has. The revolution left it with a legacy. French society was split with republicans, believed in the separation of church and state. 2/3 of the population tended to be catholics. France used to be known the #2 country of the catholic church. They still retained attitudes related to the monarchy. They believed in the greatness of france. De gaulle even wrote: france must be great or nothing. The greatness of france meant something to these people, the country must be a leader, must have a strong military. You have people who believe in the revolution (civic ideals) Those of the left see themselves as the children of the revolution.
