Jan 5th, 2016- thomas hobbes (sound light, pain, sensation, good, evil , language) How we know what we know?--> we make contact with objects exteral for us with what we touvh. Sound and light hpw we acquire ideas of the outside world. We have no immediate knowledge of the outside world cus everything we know about the outside world is mediated (slamming a desk--> we do not have immediate knowledge of the desk, Hobbes sasys we need language bc it expands our intellectual capacity. Bcus each experience based idea is unique, each impression. Politics stabalizes our language, makes it possible to talk about politics, Bcus someone enforces the language, the soveriegn enforces the correct and consistent definition of words which is the state. Without a state every person would be able to create their own words, definitions (chaos . Passion and the speeches of which they are expressed. Hobbes does not find reason as not self motivated.
