Document Summary

Regionalism: a political identity based on a shared sense of place. It may be linked to a variety of cultural, economic, institutional, and historical factors that tend to distinguish the inhabitants of one region of a country from those other regions. The party system : mainly the liberals and the conservatives. Reform party: political party founded in 1987 under the slogan the west wants in that became the canadian alliance party in 2000. There is considerable asymtery between provincial party systems and the pattern of party competition in federal elections in many of canada"s provinces. Western alliance: a belief held by many in western canada but particularly in alberta and bc, that ottawa and the mainstream political parties are by and large insensitive to the interests and preferences of western canadians. The roots of this sentiment go back to the high tariff policies and freight rates of the federal government from the late 19th century.
