SOSC 2940
Lecture 2
Globalization
• The process of increasing interconnectedness between societies such that events in one part of
the world have effects on peoples and societies far away (Held & McGrew, 2007)
Patterns of interconnectedness:
• Economic
• Legal
• Ecological
• Cultural
• Military
• Migration
Power and IR
• What is power? Are there different types of power?
• Who can have power and exert power?
• Nye: hard and soft power (Nye, 1990) – “smart power”
• Do YOU feel you have any power to change things in your community, in your country, in the
world?
Critiques of IR, the Discipline
• ‘Ghettoization’ of the IR discipline: discourse and language very much remains ‘exclusionary’
• Public debate and policy
• Eurocentric: Westphalian straitjacket
Rise of Modern International Order
• International Society
• Emergence of International Order
• Polyani’s The Great Transformation
• Imperialism and Colonialism
• Residential Schools and the TRC (briefly)
• “Alternate” International Society: Tribute System in East Asia
