How to read the constitution or the laws in general. Sources: the defining of a citizen. Intentions: they didn"t intend for slaves to be considered citizens (p. 144 p3) They were not willing to change their intentions. What characterizes the community and who makes up the community. African americans do not have the qualifications to make them a citizen. They have no rights that the whites should accept. Slavery is legal and just. Judge says it is justly and lawfully so for them to be slaves. The question of law and morality. They lack intelligence and character. Moral distinction v. human nature. Help us to understand certain laws and decisions that have been made in history. Political ideas that are imbedded in our laws. What is human nature: reason, emotions, complex, morality, freedom. The idea to be rational and then free, and then moral.
