Absence of men in family life because of war causes family problems. Laissez-faire idea was pushed aside to take on a more proactive approach through suffrage. Suffragists were concerned with passing laws that focused on the individual rather than the family. Emphasized not female weakness but that women must be independent. If they can"t be looked after by an individual (aka the husband), the state must step in. Arguments for and against suffrage focused on the idea that women must be involved in motherhood. Due to this, conservatives claimed that women have no place in politics since their only role is to be a mother. Therefore, the state is only interested in this role of motherhood to avoid delinquency. There"s a tendency to associate certain biological characteristics to each gender.
