Document Summary

Electroencephalogram (eeg: brain is hooked up to this machine, it detects the electrical signals of the brain, maps it out. Comes in wave: frequency: the amount of waves in a given period of time, amplitude: the distance from the centre to the max and min. Stages of sleep: nrem1 (stage 1): rst stage of sleep that we enter. Any noise will wake you up; still kinda aware of your surroundings. Hypnic jerks: you fall asleep and you jerk and wake up. Friday, november 18, 2016: greater amplitude and low frequency compared to other frequency, rem sleep, aka paradoxical sleep (something that contradicts something) You cannot move: sleep paralysis: when dreaming and you cannot wake up, even if aware. Sometimes people wake up and motor activity is still inhibited: breathing is irregular, genital arousal, physiological reaction- independent of any dream. Dreaming can occur in all stages: stories more involved, more emotions in rem, in other stages it would be like pictures.
