Abnormal behaviours medical model proposes that it is useful to think of abnormal behaviour as a disease. Involves 3 factors: diagnosis involves distinguishing one illness from another, etiology refers to the apparent causation and developmental history of an illness, a prognosis is a forecast about the probable course of an illness. Abnormal behaviours classified as mental illness, psychological disorder, and psychopathology (pathology refers to manifestations of disease). Thomas szasz (1974, 1990): abnormal behaviour usually involves a deviation from social norms rather than an illness, medical model"s disease analogy converts moral and social questions about what is acceptable behaviour into medical questions. 1 or 2 criteria might apply but it only takes one to diagnose a person with psychological disorder . People are judged to have psychological disorders only when their behaviour becomes extremely deviant, maladaptive, or distressing. David rosenhan (1973) had pseudo patients who are healthy go to hospital complaining hearing voiced.
