Lecture notes feb 4, 9, 11, mar 1. People with psychological disorders in the past were treated with trephining, and then humours to exorcisms and then to asylums. During the age of enlightenment (1775), pinel insisted that people in asylums to not be treated poorly and to not abuse the people with disorders. Pinel created the medical model: abnormal behaviour should be viewed as a disease and treated as one. There is no one definition for abnormality; it is dependant on what the individual believes it to be. The four criteria for defining abnormal behaviour. Distress often occurs, but its not an essential feature of abnormality. Psychological disorder: a syndrome marked by a clinically significant disturbance of a person"s cognition, emotional regulation or behaviour. Problems with diagnosing: diagnostic interview, personality/projective tests, interview family and friends, self fulfilling prophecy, social stigma, it colours your perception, being sane in insane places.
