Social cognition: combination of social psych and cognitive psych. Cognitive:scientific study of basic mental abilities such as perception, learning and memory. Social cognition: how people think about and make sense of other people, themselves and social situations. Did stroop task(with colours): measures cognitive psychology, result is its easier to name an ink colour than conflicting. Our brains cannot tend to every stimuli, it needs to process quickly reach a conclusion and move on. Need for accurate knowledge, need for nonspecific closure(sometimes we just make decision and move on), need for specific closure(motive to reach conclusion where we want specific answer) How social cognition: governed by two systems of processing info cognitive system: conscious, rational and controlled system of thinking. Experiential system: an unconscious intruitive and automatic thinking. Dual process theories: we use two systems of thinking as bases or foundation (cognitive and experiential) Uses heuristics: mental shortcuts, rules of thumb that we use for making judgement and decisions.
