PSYC 2021 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Statistical Inference, Social Insurance, Kelvin
Document Summary
Common sense: can outperform statistics in several ways such as recognizing patterns(handwriting, human language, etc. ) than computer programs based on statistics. In other cases, statistics can outperform common sense in other ways that require relevant information found beyond what can be accessible or less vivid than what can be perceived with our senses such as personal and impersonal information. Tests hypotheses, model processes & predicts future events. Takes data & frequencies, determines averages & standard deviations = observational patterns & give a general picture of what the data resembles. Provides a description of a specific group(s) (statistical data) to describe these groups as a whole picture. Draws conclusions from statistical data about differences, effects, causes & implications related to research questions. Having the same purpose as descriptive but looking beyond the given data (hypothesizing & probabilities) to shape possibilities. Divide into the smallest possible ratio (like decimals) Grade point ( f=0, e=1, d=2, d+=3, c=4, c+=5, b=6,b+=7, a=8, a+=9)
