The goal of central tendency is to ind the single score that is most typical or most representaive of the enire group. The concept of an average or representaive score is called central tendency. This average value can then be used to provide a simple descripion of an enire populaion or a sample. Central tendency characterizes what is typical for a large populaion and, in doing so, makes large amounts of data more digesible. However, no single measure produces a central representaive number in every single situaion. Someimes you may get a distribuion that is not simple or symmetrical. To deal with that problem, three methods were developed to measure central tendency. The mean for a distribuion is the sum of the scores divided by the number of scores.
