-the underlying causes within the person of individual behaviour and experience. -the dynamic and organized set of characteristics that influence cognition, motivation and behaviours. -the consistent behaviour patterns originating in the individual (behaviourism) -the dynamic organization of pychophysical systems that create the person(cid:495)s characteristic: broad, sweeping, (cid:494)philosophies(cid:495) of the person eg freud vs skinner patterns of behaviour. There is no consensus; multiple competing theories all used to explain the same observation. Personality thories: formal attempts to describe and explain why people differ, ask different questions. These theories are not incompatible, but very ambiguous. Comprehensive theories of personalities make formulation about these four dimesnions: motivation, mental structures / cognition. Skinner gave us what happens when you give altered reinforcements. Eg alter animal(cid:495)s behaviour in reward for treats. for cognitive distortions eg person doesn(cid:495)t study since success is in hands of faith. They are competing for mutually exclusive goals; a conflict model. Has to sya something about variation: development.
