We need to be able to measure personality qualities in order for it to be useful. It would be very limited if we couldn t measure it. Mmpi - 2 makes personality assesments. very structured. Everybody gets an a+ if at the end of the term as a class project you bring me a device that measures shyness. With no tests and textbooks and no classes. First define what is shyness, then you look at scholarly articles of experts defining shyness in experiments. Then you look at different items that match to your definition of shyness. If someone shows you data that shy people like to choose chocolate flavour ice cream over vanilla. We rationally think it is inaccurate but because data shows that this is the trend among shy people we going to include this item. Rorschach test: he was interested in the connection between perception and personality. A projective test, we impose our unconscious on the inkblot picture.
