PSYC 2130 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Longitudinal Study, Central Tendency, Social Desirability Bias
Document Summary
Chapter 2- methods of personality research and assessment: Systematic observations: carefully monitoring or measuring and recording behavior in prescribed ways. 3 basic approaches to personality: experimental, correlational, and case studies. 2 criteria must be met: a factor is hypothesized to cause the behavior being studied is systematically varied, all other possible factors are held constant. The independent variable is the factor that is varied. The dependant variable is the factor that is observed after the independent variable is varied. Experimental group: subjects exposed to independent variable. Control group: subjects remain the same and are not exposed to the independent variable. Confounding variables: any variables that influence the dependant variable (hidden effect). Random assignment: every subject has an equal chance of being placed in each group. There is a high degree of control over context, environment and subject characteristics. Can have more than 2 groups and no control group.
