PSYC 2130 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Intellectualization, Wisconsin National Guard, Psychopathology
Document Summary
The workings of the unconscious mind: defenses and slips. Some facts, thoughts or feelings could make you feel uncomfortable or anxious if you were consciously aware of them. You may also have urges that would get you into trouble if expressed. An important responsibility for the ego is to keep these disturbing parts of mental life safely locked inside the unconscious sectors of the mind. Vague and uneasy to desperate and debilitating terror (anxiety attack) Generated from stresses from outside world and also conflicts within mind. The tension between these 3 aspects of reality what is right, possible and what you want is the fact of life. Id generates wants, superego provides moral judgment, ego tries to figure out the rational thing to do. Because desires, morals and possibilities are usually contradictory, the id, ego and superego can find themselves at odds. Psychic conflict when mind battles itself, resulting in anxiety. Ego cares about practical consequences; superego cares about right/wrong.
