PSYC 2130 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Mind, Psychotherapy, Mental Event
Document Summary
Very few psychologists have had as great an impact on psychology and popular culture as freud. Today there is still an active and thriving community of therapists who practice orthodox psychoanalysis , aka freudian psychoanalysis. Freudian ideas became basis of all modern talk therapies. Carl rogers, a student of freud, came up with humanistic approach and client-centred therapy. Came up with it due to dissatisfaction with freudian ideas and treatments. Said that psychoanalysis sets up power imbalance between all-powerful doctor and passive, powerless patient. Felt the only thing it accomplished was meeting the needs of the elitist psychoanalytic professional community, and thus went out and created a new approach. Wolpe, who was of the behaviourist inclination, felt freud"s method took too long. In psychoanalysis, a client can meet with a therapist three or four times a week for years! Wolpe said must be more efficient way to treat targeted symptoms.
