PSYC 2220 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Nystagmus, Color Vision, Shinkansen
Document Summary
There are two vestibular sacs: utricle and saccule. Otoliths are calcium deposits and they are three times heavier than the liquids. Cray fish also have a similar system like this. When they lose their shell, they lose part of the system. They pick up something and put it in the head and the shell forms. Otoliths also respond to acceleration (bends backwards) and deceleration (bends forward) linearly: semi-circular canals. It is the second system in the vestibular system. At the base of the canals, there is a cupula. The cupula and the liquid is the same so it will not respond to gravity. It is not redundant as the vestibular sacs systems. It does not respond to linear acceleration and deceleration in lieu, it responds to rotary acceleration and deceleration: tricking the vestibular system. If visual and vestibular are competing against each other, visual would always win. If one is stationary, if the world is moving.
