Document Summary

Phenomenological study experiences as they occur (like wundt) Worked w/ 2 studnets: koffka & k hlerh. Idea came from a thing: on the train, there are things that look like they"re moving but they"re actually not, so buys, stroboscope apparent motion. A device that presents a series of successive pictures producing apparent motion: called it the phi phenomenon. Phi phenomenon 2 black lines projected on a white background: 1 vertical, 1 horizontal. At an optimal interval, the observer sees apparent movement (the still imgs show apparent movement even though there actually wasn"t any: changing the length of time interval auses movement to disappear. Study of experience as it occurs {exp as the stroboscope is moving, not after it"s stopped} Sort of like what william james said about consciousness; need to look at the pieces all together. Kurt koffka (1886-1941) & wolfgang k hler (1887-1967) worked w/ wertheimer. Don"t have innate ideas, not born with them.
