Edward bradford titchener (1867-1892) argued for psychology as a pure science: british-born, 1892: professor at cornell university saw himself as representing european science in. America; kept wanting to go back home: graduated 50+ phds. T: trained observer, keep conditions constant to eliminate outside influences. T: repeated trials & average them out over time both: break down structure into its parts (wundt started) T: very similar to the experiments wundt was doing in his lab w/ similar appratus. Focus: consciousness: mind = mental processes over our lifespan, consciousness = mental processes occurring now, but: consciousness is ever-changing. Sensations, images, feelings: attributes: quality, intensity, clearness, duration, all can be measured/quantified. Sensations and images have all four attributes; feelings have three (no clearness) a lot like wundt"s experimental psychology. Introspective habit: skill that had to be learnt. Introspective habit: ability to make observations without disturbing the ongoing mental process method behind accessing consciousness.
