Expanding college population and demand for graduate education. 17 universities in existence (4 non-denominational; rest are all religiously affiliated) Rise of public school system: most provinces follow ontario"s protestant public school system. Protestant (english) schools become increasingly secularized across the provinces. Spread of psychology labs across (north) america b/c of the increase in possible space. 1875: william james" demonstration laboratory at harvard not a research lab. 1883: g. stanley hall"s experimental laboratory at johns hopkins first research lab, wundt"s 1st.
