PSYC 3140 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Models Of Abnormality, Basal Ganglia, Existential Therapy
Document Summary
C h a p t e r :3. To p i c ov e rv i e w. L e c t u r e o u t l i n e: models of abnormality. In science, the perspectives used to explain events are known as models or paradigms. Each spells out basic assumptions, gives order to the field under study, and sets guidelines for investigation. Each model focuses on one aspect of human functioning and no single model can ex-plain all aspects of abnormality. The first area of examination is brain anatomy. The brain is composed of approximately 100 billion nerve cells (called neurons) and thousands of billions of support cells (called glia: within the brain, large groups of neurons form distinct areas called brain re-gions. The cortex is the outer layer of the of th brain, The corpus callosum connecfts the brains two cerebral hemishpehres. The basal ganglia plays a crucilal role in planning and producing movement.
