Trying novel and arousing things together can promote the expansion of the sense of self. Self-other overlap: incorporating the other person into our sense of self. On days where couples felt some degree of self-expansion, both partners reported more sexual desirability (higher likelihood of engaging in sex that day) and relationship satisfaction. Self-expansion today leads to more relationship satisfaction tomorrow (although it doesn"t predict more self-expansion tomorrow) A partner bene ts from the self expansion of their signi cant other, regardless of their own self-expansion. Doing novel activities: increases time with partner, positive emotions, a variety of types of activities, arousal (it did not matter if the activity was arousing or not, mechanical turk. Individuals who read the article about how self-expansion bene ts to relationship satisfaction, reported higher sexual desire and higher relationship satisfaction. Individuals who read the article about how familiar activities bene ts relationship satisfaction, reported higher relationship satisfaction (but not higher sexual desire)
