The rate of dissociative identity disorder has significantly increased in recent years and i believe that this upward trend will continue due to two major factors: 1. The majority of did patients have experienced physical, mental, or sexual childhood trauma/abuse, 2. Did is prevalent in couples that are involved in domestic violence. Incidents of child abuse have been constantly documented in canada, canadian incidence study of reported child abuse and neglect reported 15,980 cases in 2008 (cwrp, 2008); there has been an upward trend observed in recent years. For example: ctv news covered a story about a. Newfoundland woman who was sentenced to 11 years for, abusing and torturing seven of her children (ctv news, 2014). Did patients who have suffered some form of abuse in their childhood, have resorted to creation of multiple personalities as a form of coping mechanism.
