Document Summary
Even if a message is not attended to, the information it contains is still available. Stereo metaphor: individuals can modify the volume of the incoming message. People can modify the volume of incoming messages. Three kinds of analysis for incoming messages: Message is parsed into syllables and words (linguistic) Meaningful units (e. g. , your name) tend to be processed more easily. The threshold for these units are lower -> they are recognizable at low volumes (cocktail party effect) Attentional system determines which of the incoming information is most important. All messages are routinely processed for at least some aspect of meaning. Only information that is judged to be most important is elaborated/processed more fully -> more likely to be retained. Only difference - discrimination happens a lot later. The importance of a message depends on: Major difference: all of the information is processed for at least some aspect of meaning. Unawareness and disinclination to attend to one side of their body.
