Large trees are a better prediction to show where they"re going. There is no proof that they use mental mapping. Travel routes are restrained to where they can actually travel. Ecological factors not cognitive factors explain the route network. How they travel might be cognitively based but where the roads are is ecological. Change in behaviour 4 hours before escape event. More and increasing travel, less and decreasing feeding before escape. Escape in different areas of habitat than normal travel. Escape off of habitual route network, towards open areas of poor habitat. Migration: follow seasonally available resources, extremely fine-tuned timing- sometimes within 1 day of resource becoming available, avoid bad weather, freezing etc. , sometimes to minimize predation to young.
