Cultural ideas and norms don"t necessarily emerge to address universal problems- they result from local learning. Cultures are fluid and dynamic, and, in most cases, will change over time. Think of norms regarding blowing your nose, spitting, farting, burping. Hococen epoch: 12,000 years since last ice age. Less genetic variability among different populations of humans than there is among different populations of chimpanzees: b/w groups very small differences. Different societies emerged: some literate- industrial cultures, some illiterate- agricultural, some hunter gatherers- retaining stone tools (very few, fragile existence, isolated) To survive, ppl had to meet bio needs (eg. reproduction) and social motives (eg.
