Do humans prefer solitude or membership in groups. Exclusion is aversive and avoided - there are negative outcomes that are associated with being excluded: Ostracism - excluding one or more individuals from a group by reducing or eliminating contact - you are not having any contacted with any group. Forms of exclusion: ignored, avoided, shunning (both social and physical) Forms of inclusion: granted membership, welcomes, recruited. Dani"s story - the girl in the window - environmental autism. On july 13, 2005, police responded to a neighbor"s call. A 6 year old girl named danielle was found in terrible living conditions. Could not speak, couldn"t hold a sippy cup. She behaved like an injured animal dr. rodriguez attending er physician. 6 y/o, but had language and behavioural skills of a 6 month old. Impact of rejection - roy baumeister (psychologically - life alone studies - in his lab would have people come, participants, and give them personality inventories. )
