Studying the Bias in psych research
oEverything we know is derived from research
oTheir may always be bias in research
Selecting the research topic may be influenced by:

Perhaps the similarities perspective is not going to receive more grant
money?? (differences approach is more sensational (more$$)
Research’s that establishes differences are more likely to be published
Process
oFormulate the hypotheses (the questions they ask themselves may be a
bias their)
oDesigning the study ( maybe be bias their)
Selecting research participants
oAre the participants representative of the larger population? (There is a
bias for ppl that apply for research, there are different motivators to
attending research
oIs the gender composition specified?
oOther sampling limitations: race, socioeconomic status, sexuality,
disability
Analyzing and interpreting the findings
Statistical significance (there is a 5% chance that the difference b/w the 2
groups occurred by chance, some will use a 1% difference) (we are more
inclined in social psych to look at practical significance) (based on a
meta analysis the differences are not big **been exaggerated** (How
big the sample?? Demographics?? All of this helps us be more objective
Interpreting findings in a way that suggests female weakness or
inferiority
Inappropriate generalization
Assumption that presence of gender differences implies biological causes
(Hines, 2007)
Communicating the findings

Avoiding gender-biased language
Narrative approach: review and summarize many studies to form an
impression of general trends on a particular topic
Meta-analysis: statistical method of integrating results of many studies on
the same topic
Theme 1: Intersectionality: The Diversity of Women’s Identities
and Experiences
We cannot think as identities as one construct, A personal identity is a
cumulate of multiple identities
Theme 2: Gender Differences in Power
Organizational power use resources to dominate and control others
Interpersonal power aligns with aggression and violence against women
(ex. Father deciding what the daughter should be doing)
Power over this notion of having power over another person is a
problem, this is for the most part negative
Power to empowering ppl ( males and females), focuses on the growth
aspect of ppl
Theme 3: Social Construction of Gender
Goes with the similarities approach
Questions a different gender, difference ethnical, different sexual
orientation, a disability
