Document Summary
Perception - the ability to make act on the sensory info to begin to make sense of it. Cognition - the ability to understand what we are perceiving, learn about it, clas. William james - believed that perception is not present at birth. He has since been proven he was wrong. Nativists - infants have sensations and meaning of them since birth. The babies sucked the smoother nipple for longer compared to the a bumpy nipple. Through habituation they also realized they can tell the di erent between the two textures. The babies eventually got bored of one textures and when a new one was introduced they were excited again newborns can detect changes in weight. They were given tubes lled with di erent weights (cotton balls vs. little pellets) the babies would recognize when the weight changed and they would play with it longer. Researchers detected the babies recognition of di erent weights through habituation.
